Distilled or demineralised water is technically the purest form of water, without any added salts, minerals, or pathogens. However, unlike the USA and Europe, it’s uncommon to find potable distilled water for drinking in Indian stores.
Here are a few easy ways to check if your water is pure:
Purchase from a Reliable Pharma-Grade Distilled Water Supplier
For top-quality distilled water, it’s best to buy from an authorised pharma-grade supplier. We have recommendations for certain cities, so feel free to get in touch with us for suggestions.
Smell Test
Pour some distilled water into a clean cup (even a paper cup will work). Pure distilled water is completely odourless. If you detect a grassy or pungent smell, it may indicate microbial growth like algae or fungi. Make sure the cup is clean, so external smells don’t interfere.
Measure the TDS
Invest in a small TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter, which costs around ₹200. This device helps you check the water’s purity. Distilled water should ideally have a TDS of zero, but anything below 10 TDS is acceptable.
Visual Check for Suspended Solids
Check the water for any suspended particles or fine solids. These won’t show up in a TDS test but are a sign the water is not fully purified.
Boil the Water or Use UV Treatment
If you are still unsure about the water’s purity, boiling it will help remove any pathogens. UV treatment is also a good option. However, we do not recommend adding any chemicals to the water, as this may alter its profile.
We hope this information helps you ensure your water is pure for brewing. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us!
